Poor Man Cookie

Poor Man Cookie Instructions:

Here's a quick and easy recipe you can make with your kids which requires no cooking and only three ingredients.

  1. Saltine Crackers
  2. Butter
  3. Sugar

During the 1930's there was a very bad depression when very few people had very much money because there were very few jobs.

To create a family treat, mothers' got creative. This is what they did:

  • Take a saltine cracker.

  • Cut a very thin patty of butter and spread it on the cracker.
(Leaving the butter out for a while will help it spread easier.)

  • Then sprinkle sugar over it. The sugar will adhere to the butter.

  • Shake off the excess sugar and return it to the sugar container so you don't waste any.

Then you have a treat to enjoy.

If you don't have any saltine crackers, you can substitue bread for the crackers and follow the same procedure.

Although I did not grow up during the depression, my grandparents did. My grandfather is the one who taught me how to make this. I still like to eat it occasionally and think of my Grandpa as I eat it.

I am passing a legacy on as I teach it to my Grandchildren.
